Don’t worry; we’ve all been there, and we’re here to help you cut through the jargon and miscommunications. The more job postings you look at, the more buzzwords you’ll come across, such as “data-driven,” “team player,” and “process improvement.”

Understanding all of the buzzwords in job listings will assist you in determining whether or not a job is right for you. In an earlier post, we discussed project management as a role, but many companies list it as a skill. Now for some more good news. You’ll soon be qualified for a job as a project manager or one that requires project management skills.

Now for the even better news. If you have project management skills, you will be qualified for programme manager or operational roles that require you to work in an end-to-end system or department, which also requires the same skill set.

Let’s look at some jobs that will use your project management skills. Keep your options open when job hunting. You do not have to limit yourself to project manager positions. There are numerous other positions for which you are qualified. Reading the job descriptions will help you determine which positions are a good fit for you, so cast a wide net.

Depending on your field, you may find positions such as Operations Manager, Program Manager, Operations Associate, or Project Assistant. All of these could be excellent matches for your abilities. Assume you’re looking for project management jobs on a job board when you come across an opening for a Community Operations Manager in a small city.

Although the job title isn’t Project Manager, you’ll notice that the job functions and years of experience match. A list of required skills, such as organisational management, critical planning and communication skills, budget preparation and monitoring, may be included in the job description.

Does this sound familiar? Perhaps you’ll even notice that the job’s responsibilities seem familiar, such as creating monthly status reports, assisting in the implementation of new technologies, tracking work progress, managing and monitoring performance metrics, assisting other members of the team on assigned projects, etc. These responsibilities are almost a perfect match for your project management abilities, and there are plenty more listings like these two. How awesome is that?

Project management skills apply to all roles and professions. At some point in our lives, we’ve all worked with or learned from a project manager., believe it or not. Can you figure out who it is?
